Mrs Whitlam by Bruce Pascoe
Published by Magabala Books
This book is about Marnie, a young Aboriginal girl who is often teased by the other kids in the district. She has a dream and that is to own a horse and ride it everywhere. Then one day she meets Mrs Arnold who has lost her daughter in a car crash and needs someone to take on her horse – Mrs Whitlam or Maggie for short. While Marnie can’t believe her luck in gaining a beautiful Clydesdale horse she is torn by Mrs Arnold’s loss and promises to take good care of Maggie. They soon become firm friends.
Riding Maggie doesn’t stop the kids from teasing her, they are actually mean about her horse too. Marnie prefers to ride on the beach by herself. Then one day she and Maggie stumble across a mother who has lost one of her children in the rough surf. Marnie dives in to save the child and Maggie swims out too.
This adventure leads Marnie to talk to George, the local surfer boys and their families begin a friendship.
My favourite part was when Marnie and Maggie jump into the surf after the little boy. That part was quite exciting. The beginning of the book was a bit slow, but it ended well so was worth reading. I was going to give it two stars, but it got better so I am giving Mrs Whitlam three stars. I think girls who like horses would enjoy this book.
