Fizz and the Police Dog Tryouts by Lesley Gibbes
Published by Allen & Unwin
Fizz is a fluffy puppy. His two brothers Puff-Pup and Fluff-Pup just love being companion dogs for old Mrs Winterbottom. His sister Bella is a little lap dog. Crystal is a handbag dog for a famous actress. But Fizz didn’t want to be any of them. He wanted to be a police dog. When he went to the boarding house gates he went to Tom Whittaker and he was looking at the newspaper and Fizz came and looked at it too.
And it said: Police Tryouts tomorrow. All dogs welcome. Pass three tests to qualify. Be at the Sunnyvale City Police Station 7am sharp.
When Fizz woke up he had butterflies in his tummy. He quickly ate his breakfast and tiptoed past his parent’s room so his parents didn’t know he was going.
There was a long queue of dogs waiting and the one who was in front of his was called Ben. And they got to be good friends.
There were 2 not nice dogs and they said “get out of the way for the winner” and a big other dog that was not nice called Amadeus came up to Fizz and was nasty.
Then the police officer who was in charge said, “Now it’s the Bark Test”. It was Fizz’s go and he did the loudest bark so he passed the first test. Then it was the scary test and Fizz passed that. And then it was the final test to try to bring down a pretend robber. When it was Fizz’s go he ran very fast to catch up to him but then Amadeus knocked him down instead of Fizz. So Amadeus was the new police dog. But Fizz also got to be an undercover officer because he had a good natural disguise. Then his parents came and his two sisters and brothers and they were all cheering and his training would start the next day.
The last illustration looks like Snoopy. I give this story 10/10.
My favourite part was the scaring test when he was the loudest even scared Amadeus.
