Princess Betony and the Rule of the Wishing by Pamela Freeman
Published by Walker Books
Part of the PRINCESS BETONY series, this new chapter book by Pamela Freeman finds the little princess intent on finding a true friend.
It’s difficult to find friends when you’re a princess and shadowed by Lady Pineal, a lady-in-waiting who sticks strictly by the rules and won’t allow familiarity with her royal charge. While Lady Pineal expects everyone, even children, to curtsy and be extra nice to Princess Betony, Betony herself just wants a friend with whom she can be herself and who can be comfortable with her in just the same way.
One day, Betony’s mother Queen Salixia takes her for a walk in the Dark Forest of Nevermore. As a dryad, spirit of the willow tree, the Queen must visit the forest often to stay healthy. The Wild Magic that controls such things allows Betony to be there too.
Queen Salixia ensures Betony finds a friend, Alexir, a naiad, who is the nymph who guards a stream in the forest. But Alexir only wants to lie around in the water.
The next day a disappointed Betony helps palace gardener Rosie plant carrots. Later, in Rosie’s cottage, she meets Clover, who is Rosie’s niece. Because Betony is not dressed as a princess that day, Clover has no idea she’s not just another child. Betony likes the natural way Clover acts with her and because she wants Clover to be her friend, she has no intention of ever revealing she is royal.
Soon Betony discovers being a friend is not as easy as she had thought, especially when Clover decides she wants to be a witch and needs to search for the Rule of Wishing.
Clover is obsessed by her quest and drags Betony into more and more risky adventures, incidents that as her true magic self, Betony might have been able to make easier for them, but this would mean revealing how she differs from Clover. Lots of learning about friendship ensues for both girls, including, finally, the meaning of the Rule of Wishing. But what will happen when Betony must at last reveal she is a princess?
This is a sweet and quite exciting story about treating everyone equally, respecting differences and not expecting people to be anything else but themselves.
