Blue & Bertie by Kristyna Litten
Published by Koala Books
Talented author and illustrator Kristyna Litten, offers pre-school readers a colourful tale of friendship, and what it is like to see the world through a new perspective.
Litten’s talent for bringing her animal characters to life shines through from the outset with a glorious cover illustration of heroes Blue and Bertie, young giraffes with a striking difference in the colour of their skin. Even without words, the illustrations convey the very ‘beige’ life that Bertie is leading with the giraffe herd, through to the burst of colour that his friend Blue brings to his life after a chance meeting.
Blue finds Bertie at a low ebb when he has become separated from the other giraffes but his despair soon turns to gratitude as Blue extends the hand of friendship and offers to help him find his way home. Their journey takes them off the beaten path and into a colourful jungle, the likes of which Bertie has never seen. The double page portrait of Blue and Bertie, standing full height amongst the birds and the trees, is certainly a highlight and allows Litten full reign to display her unique illustrative style.
As the day nears its end and Bertie is reunited with the other giraffes, he is reluctant to let Blue go and invites him to join the herd. Blue’s very point of difference makes him a favourite with his new family and his fresh outlook changes their lives forever. Gone are the ‘beige’ and the humdrum, replaced with a bright splash of blue and the promise of new adventures every day.
The superb use of colour in Blue and Bertie shows the richness friendship can bring to life, and the reward of new experiences. Early readers will marvel at the blue giraffe and the magic he brings to those around him.
