The Midnight Possum by Sally Morgan
Published by Omnibus Books
This is a lovely Aussie picture book! Possum loves midnight and that is the time he goes exploring. One night as he travels along he finds a mother possum who has lost one her babies. Possum comes to the rescue and with vigour and courage he rescues the baby possum. The story starts quite lyrically as we are introduced to the sounds that Australian animals can make. We see a koala, a kangaroo, a bilby and a wombat. Inside a house fast asleep we see a cat and dog. At the end of the story we sees sleeping cockatoos and an owl, a great myriad of Australian animals.
The illustrations in this story convey the midnight setting with a grey blue sky and a quarter moon. Colour is conveyed through the flora and fauna. The end papers keep up the Aussie theme with eucalyptus leaves and red gum flowers.
This story is a great story conveying Australian animals and their habitat. Many Australians have often heard a possum or two running across their roof or back fence.
