Ella and Olivia #15- Hair Disaster by Yvette Poshoglion
Published by Scholastic Australia
Ella is a happy and intelligent seven year old who loves ballet and is very excited because she is going to play the lead role in her ballet school's production of Sleeping Beauty and she'll get to wear her hair up in a bun like a real princess. She's been growing it especially and practising very hard with the help and encouragement of little sister Olivia who is almost as excited as Ella.
Ella is five years old and loves doing hair and makeup. She's been helping Olivia get into character while they practise for the performance at home, when she gets a little carried away and... disaster ensues. A Hair Disaster! Will Ella still be able to wear her hair in a bun? What if she can't? Can she still play Sleeping Beauty when everyone knows real princesses wear their hair in a neat, beautiful bun?
This enjoyable paperback for 5-7 year olds is enhanced by the bright clear half and full page black and white illustrations of Danielle McDonald. From the pastel pink cover and all throughout the book, they clearly depict the lovely relationship between sweet and talented Ella and her bubbly yet adoring sister Olivia. Little girls in this age group will especially love the deceivingly simple text, which still manages to introduce some technical ballet terms without obstructing the flow of the story.
As this is number fifteen in the fun-loving Ella and Olivia series, I'm sure these bright and caring little girls and their supportive and sometimes amusing family need no recommendation from me. They have it nonetheless!
