Princess Betony & The Unicorn by Pamela Freeman
Published by Walker Books
Princess Betony didn’t understand why Lady Pineal would not let her read fairytails. They were wonderful stories, all about magic, wizards, dragons & princesses.
She knew that wizards existed in Floramonde, that magic happened all over the county, but a flying book was the most magical thing she had ever seen.
Dryads are tree people and without a tree they always die. Her mother had been a Tree Willow Dryad. When her tree had been killed in a storm, Betony’s mother should have died with it. Her father, King Max, had loved her so much, somehow she had survived & become Queen Salixia.
Princess Betony knew she was half human & half Dryad. What she did not know, was if she had any magical powers like her mother, because she was not allowed to know about magic, wizards, dragons, goblins or go anywhere near the Dark Forest. The Royal Council were frightened of Dryads, wizards & all kinds of magic and forbade her ever to learn or see any magic in Floramonde.
Early one morning Betony glimpses her mother disappear into the Dark Forest, thinking her mother is running away, she decides to follow her and bring her back to the castle.
Has the Royal Council banished Queen Salixia back to the Wild Forest? Has her mother run away to live back in the Dark Forest, never to return back to King Max and Betony? Does Betony have the courage to find out if she is part of the wild magic? Can Betony pass the test of catching the unicorn, finding her mother & surviving her passage through the Dark Forest?
