Within These Walls by Robyn Bavati

Whatever is coming, we'll face it together, as a family. As long as we're together, we'll be okay.
For Miri and her family, life in Warsaw is full of simple joys. The smell of freshly baked challah, the promise of summer holidays, and Fridays when everyone comes together to celebrate the Sabbath. But when the Germans march into Warsaw with their campaign of hatred against the Jews, Miri and her family must move to the ghetto. One by one her family are taken from her, and Miri finds herself alone.
Based on true events, Within These Walls gives a realistic account of what it was like to be a Jewish child in Warsaw during the Holocaust.
Author, Robyn Bavati has written a moving story about Miri, a Jewish girl who lives through the holocaust from start of Hitler's rise in power from 1933, until the war ended in 1945. The story opens with Miri as an 8 year old girl, filled with a love of the outdoors, who loves to run—fast. Her home life is abundant with love, peace and happiness, until the war begins. Then slowly in Warsaw, the Germans introduce rules just for the Jews. The lives of the Jews become more and more oppressed, when finally, all Jews are forced into a walled Ghetto, where life becomes morbid—starvation, disease and death is rife.
Robyn Bavati has made a spectacular contrast of the life of Jews before and after the war by writing from the point of view of Miri. The heartbreaking cruelty and horror is told with just enough detail to understand exactly what is going on with, and around Miri, without going into graphic detail. It is Robyn's hope that readers will continue to read and expand their knowledge.
Within These Walls is based on true events. Robyn Bavati engaged in extensive research and interviews before writing the book, and was aware of how huge and sensitive the subject is, particularly for Holocaust survivors and descendants. She tried to make the novel rich in realistic and authentic detail as possible, and I believe she achieved this with great success.
