My Mum’s Special Secret by Sally Morgan
Published by Omnibus Books
Eminently accomplished mother and daughter team, Sally Morgan and Ambelin Kwaymullina, join for another beautifully illustrated picture book, designed to warm every mother’s heart. My Mum’s Special Secret tells of the depth of the parental bond, through the eyes of Mummy kookaburra and her adventurous baby bird.
The first thing that will capture your attention about this book is the stunning cover, rich in colour and cultural heritage, with Kwaymullina’s Aboriginal inspired artwork.
With a hunch that this book and its kookaburra heroes might appeal to my pre-school aged son, I was delighted to find that it did not disappoint, and held his otherwise difficult-to-engage attention. Apart from the vibrant colour scheme and its depiction of the natural world, the simplicity of Morgan’s formula for story telling is what makes it a perfect choice for early readers; the kind of book a parent and child will find themselves reading again and again.
The story tells of Mummy kookaburra and her eager-to-learn baby bird, with each double page uncovering a different aspect in the young kookaburra’s education, and his reliance on his mum’s role in helping him to learn. The vivid imagery and evocative text crescendo in a beautiful image of mum and baby gazing at the stars together, leading to a very special secret being revealed, which is sure to resonate with all mothers reading to their children.
Young readers will surely delight in the colourful adventures of baby kookaburra, and mothers will revel in the touching moment when the little one says, “I love you, Mum.”
