Milo A Moving Story by Tohby Riddle
Published by Allen & Unwin
I have to admit I am a Tohby Riddle fan and before beginning my initial read of the book I caught a glimpse of some of the illustrations. The illustrations reignited my love of the Great Escape from City Zoo, my favourite of Tohby’s books. I love that I need to read Tohby’s books more than once to absorb its themes.
Although Milo lived in okay part of town, I felt this book was quintessentially New York. Milo is a dog living in the city and one day everything goes wrong. His ordinary life of delivering parcels is thrown upside down when he argues with his friend and soon after a wild storm he finds himself somewhere else away from his home. The story then follows his journey back to his friends.
In simplest terms, this story is about friendship, how we resolve our problems, and how friendship can be the centre of our lives. Tohby’s illustrations use minimal colour and this helps add humour and a touch of light to the story. This is another aspect I love about his books.
The bird in the story wears sneakers and Milo is fully clothed and wearing a hat. This gives the characters human traits.
Enjoy reading this story a few times, soak up the themes and share your thoughts with others. A great book to be read with children of all ages.
