The Pocket Dogs and the Lost Kitten by Margaret Wild
Published by Scholastic Australia
Biff & Buff are Mr Pockets’ dogs. When Mr Pockets went out, he would place Biff in the right pocket of his coat & Buff in the left pocket. They enjoyed being pockets dogs for Mr Pockets.
One stormy night, a wet lost kitten scratched at the door. Mr Pockets let the kitten inside & dried it off. The next few days Biff & Buff looked after the tiny kitten until they noticed Mr Pockets spending a lot of time with the kitten, even letting her sleep on his chest.
Biff & Buff had bad dreams about Mr Pockets & the kitten. The next day they started to growl at it until Mr Pockets realised what was wrong. He explained to Biff & Buff how he still loved them, but that the kitten also needed love & a home.
Biff & Buff felt sorry they had been mean to the tiny kitten, so they invited her to stay and become part of the happy family. They even helped Mr Pockets name her Molly.
A delightfully well written & illustrated book, any child would be proud to have in their library. I enjoyed the underlying theme of acceptance & tolerance to others who come into our family. This would be a unique way of explaining to your children, how you always have love to give others, without taking away from your love for them, particularly when a new child is on the way.
