Teacup by Rebecca Young
Published by Scholastic Australia
This beautiful picture book with gentle illustrations takes us on a journey of both sadness and hope. The book starts with a young boy leaving his home land and setting off alone in a small paddle boat with nothing but a few sentimental items and a teacup of dirt from where he once played. The story takes us on his journey across the ocean where he sees some times of turbulence and darkness as well as moments of sunshine and calm until he finally finds a new place to call home.
Youngsters will most likely see this book as a lovely story of a boy who sets out on the sea to find a new home, but older readers may also see the deeper meaning of this book. It describes a sense of loss and sadness that we may feel when we leave behind all that we know and the hope we hold on to as we endure times of change in the search for something/somewhere/someone new to make us feel home again.
