The Bad Guys by Aaron Blabey
Published by Scholastic Australia
What better time to review this book than after the wonderful announcement of The Bad Guys receiving the INDIE BOOK AWARD for Children's Book of the Year AND with the next episode (3) of The Bad Guys; The Furball Strikes Back, coming out on the 1st of May. If you haven't read any of these hilarious books then this is the place to start. Meet Mr. Wolf, Mr. Snake, Mr. Piranha and Mr. Shark, in short The Bad Guys. Except, they're not bad...well not really...anymore. In fact they (Mr. Wolf AKA Big Bad, Grandma) want to change their image and become The Good Guys. Watch and read along as Mr. Wolf tries (and fails) to convince Red Riding Hood and then the others that they really are good guys.
If you have a 6-9 year old then this is the holiday entertainment you're looking for. Aaron Blabey's laugh out loud junior chapter book cleverly incorporates fairy tales and picture books, police rap sheets, various size and style of fonts and quirky facial expressions of the characters to humorous effect. He'll have every member of your family sniggering or snorting with laughter. Told like a graphic novel this story highlights both Blabey's writing and illustrative talents, and his comic ability too. What is particularly great about this book is that it is appealing to both boys and girls.
The bright orange dust jacket with the menacing black and white text in a variety of fonts, the main characters smiling uncomfortably on the front and tearing off in a souped up car on the back, set the scene for the rip roaring read inside.
