The White Rose by Amy Ewing
Published by HarperCollins
This intriguing novel is the sequel to Amy Ewing’s debut novel, The Jewel. In The White Rose, Violet and her friends Ash and Raven embark on a mission to escape the brutality of the Jewel and the Duchess of the Lake who bought Violet at auction. To escape with her life, Violet will need to discover her unknown powers and to join the rebellion that has been surging by the Society of the Black Key.
Those readers who are familiar with The Jewel will be familiar with the cruelty and violence that lies within the walls of the Lone City. Within The White Rose there are continued themes of brutality, abuse of power and exploitation of young women and young men as they are kept for their sexual and reproductive uses and then discarded.
Although this is an intriguing story, it may be difficult at times for sensitive readers and as such the book may be more appropriately aimed at older teens onwards.
