Chook Doolan The Newest Pet by James Roy (CKT Kids review)
Published by Walker Books
This is one book in a series about a boy called Simon, but most people call him Chook. This is his nickname because he’s chicken of almost everything. Actually he’s just not very brave, but it’s enough that people call him Chook. He has a best friend Joe, who isn’t scared of anything (except maths tests). Chook has two pets, a cat and a goldfish. So when it’s bring a pet to school day all he has to do is choose which one. Joe doesn’t have any pets because his sister is allergic to everything. Chook doesn’t want Joe to feel left out, but he’s not sure he’s brave enough to find Joe a pet.
I like Chook because he wants to help his friend. It would be horrible to not have any pets and even worse to feel left out. The best part of this book was when all the pets were at school for the day. The classroom was like a noisy, smelly zoo. That would be lots of fun.
I think children who are learning to read would like this book because it’s easy and there are some good pictures. I give this book three stars.
