Chook Doolan Rules are Rules by James Roy (CKT Kids review)
Published by Walker Books
This story is about a boy called Chook, but that’s not his real name. His real name is Simon, but he’s called Chook because he is chicken of everything. Everyone calls him Chook, even his teacher. One morning Chook’s older brother is sick and can’t walk Chook to school. Chook is scared to do this by himself, but his dad tells him, the best way to stay safe is to be brave and make sure you don’t talk to anyone until you’re in the school gates. This is a good rule and one thing Chook likes is rules. Rules are rules, but they don’t make him any less scared. On his walk to school Chook comes across many rules, but he can’t tell anyone about them because of his Dad’s walk to school rule. This makes the book funny.
The rules didn’t help Chook, they just made him sad and lonely. I liked the part when his best friend Joe came up with a solution for Chook. They were some really good ideas.
This book was easy to read, but lots of fun. I think it would be perfect for 5-6 year olds. I give Chook Doolan three stars.
