Published by Walker Books Australia
Left! Left! Left! Right! Left! We make our way in the dark.
A family journeys through the early morning darkness...
A group of young men huddle in a cold muddy trench...
Reflection is a powerful tribute to those who have served their country.
Reflection. It is hard not to enter into deep thought about the history of the Australian Defence Force and indeed, the New Zealand Defence Force as you take a step inside this poignant book, which serves to remember with honour, those who have served us in wars. The words by author, Rebecka Sharpe Shelberg are few, but all the more powerful in setting the mood for the book which takes you from marching soldiers, to the cold rainy trenches, to the massive warships, to the unpredictable jungle, to the dry hot desert, to crumbling cities, and to the shores of Gallipoli. Each sentence of the story starts with 'We', uniting us all in remembrance, one voice and one understanding.
An added depth of to the story of Reflection are the brilliant, beautiful ink and watercolour drawings by illustrator, Robin Cowcher, which march shoulder to shoulder on each page spread, linking life today with the wars of the past in juxtaposition. Robin Cowcher's illustrations are simply breathtaking, and draw emotionally on the overwhelming effect of war.
After you turn the final page of the story, there is one last double page spread: this time giving you an fascinating glimpse inside the minds of Rebecka Sharpe Shelberg and Robin Cowcher, as well as ten illustrations and the accompanying information about ten wars that the ANZACs served in.
Reflection: Remembering Those Who Serve In War, is aimed at readers aged five and above. But I believe that the power in the words and illustrations will also resonate the sounds of the Last Post in the hearts of adults. This book is a solemn reminder of the devastating physical and emotional loss of war. Indeed, Reflection is a powerful tribute to those who have served their country.
Lest we forget.
