Loyal Creatures by Morris Gleitzman
Published by Penguin Books
This book is really sad. It’s set in World War One and shows how war is just torture.
Frank thinks war will be fun. He wants to go but his father won’'t let him because he is only 15. Then his father gets a white feather which means people think he should be in the war and is a chicken for not going. Frank’s father changes his mind and goes to war in Egypt. He takes Frank with him because he can’t leave him in Cudgegong by himself.
In Egypt, Frank works with horses and learns that war is nothing like he thought it would be.
I think that this book is really good at explaining how bad war is. Yes, you are serving your country, but war is not fun. It is terrible because so many people and animals die. I already hated war, but this book made me hate it more.
I recommend this book to grade 5 and up.
If you want to go to war, read this book and you will never want to go again.
