Little lunch: Triple the Treats by Danny Katz and Mitch Vane
Published by Black Dog Books
This book is based on a kid's ABC TV series is three fun stories packed into one. Each story is about five primary school kids (and their teacher) and what they get up to at recess - going to the forbidden milk bar, almost ruining Grandparents Day, and rioting over a fundraising stall.
The stories are real life kids dramas with a big splash of zany - relatable and fun! Drawing out humour from the extremes of each of the children's character traits, really endeared them to me (I loved Debra-Jo the dobber and how she struggled not to dob!) Vane's quirky comic sketches pepper the pages, spicing up the humour of Katz's text. Each story also includes a few full page photos from the TV series.
Earlier books in this series have been nominated for Koala and YABBA awards, and Little Lunch 3 won a YABBA award in 2005. The books inspired the TV series (however Triple the Treats was ‘based on the television series) which might help hook kids into the book.
With big font, comic sketches and humour that draws on the everyday, this book is feel-good fun and easy to read.
