Ella Diaries - Dreams Come True by Meredith Costain
Published by Scholastic Australia
I love this book, it is so true to the age group. I particularly enjoyed the diary like format with some words bigger, highlighted, underlined or even illustrated. It's exactly the way many girls of 8-10 yrs would write their own diaries! Meredith Constain has perfected the voice of girls of this age group, with difficult words misspelled repeatedly till they are eventually substituted with an easier one...or not. With an excess of adjectives to describe what Ella loves. Right down to some made up words like 'weirderest'.
Pink, purple, flowers, love hearts, posters and of course an iPod feature on the Danielle McDonald's equally audience appropriate jacket design. Comic style illustrations in black, white and red of various sizes right up to full page are spread liberally throughout the book enhancing both the diary format and the story.
Ella, her friends and it seems whole community LOVE or at least are excited about pop- star Cassie Valentine and her upcoming tour of the town. When Ms Weiss their teacher tantalizes them with a secret then finally reveals the competition to have Cassie Valentine visit a local school all the girls (bar Fiona McTavish who loves the bagpipes) and even some of the boys are, of course, beside themselves with excitement! Ella knows what a wonderful song writer and performer she is- just like Cassie Valentine. Everybody knows! Everybody except painful princess Peach Parker. Will Ella and her worst enemy ruin it for the whole school? Can they work together to win the competition and have Cassie Valentine perform at their own school? Or is there another way for Ella and her BFFs to prove what Peach is really like and will that mean losing their chance to have their dreams come true? What are Cassie's No. 1 fan and her BFFs to do?
I highly recommend this book for girls aged 8-10.
