Awesome Animal Stories for Kids by Aleesah Darlison
Published by Random House Australia
I have eagerly read over all twelve mini stories in the book of Awesome Animal Stories For Kids, and it's an absolutely awesome and amazing book, just like the title says. Most of the stories have a really exciting end, making you wish for more. It's a really cool skill to be able to do that. It's about all kinds of different animal stories, like pigs, dogs, grumpy dragons, sheep, chickens, dinosaurs, fursties, grembles, cats, winged ponies, crocodiles, rats, pugs, you know what I mean.
My favourite story is the last one, The Three Little Lambs and the Big Bad Chicken. It starts off quite like the ordinary fairy tale, The Three Little Pigs and the Big Bad Wolf. But then, there's quite an out-of-the-ordinary happening, stirred in with the classical lines, and in the end, the solution is that the three little lambs realise that the so-called Big Bad Chicken is actually short-sighted and thought the lambs' straw, stick and brick houses were hay, worms and a nice big roost.
My favourite character out of every character in the whole book is definitely Holly, in the story Sea Sprites and Rock Pools. Holly starts off absolutely hating and loathing the beach, thinking it's all boring and not exciting, then after Holly meets Serena, a mermaid/sea sprite, Holly begins to realise that the beach is not as boring as she first expected after all. I like Holly because she's very kind, clever and catches on quickly to Serena's sea-riddles. Holly's an extremely nice girl, I can just tell and infer from her behaviour. I wish that I could be Holly for a few hours so I could play with Serena in the rock pools too. I'd especially love to ride Serena's fish, Bubbles, like Holly did! Cool!
My favourite description of a character in the whole book is Puff the dragon in the story Puff Returns. I can clearly see that Puff used to be a bright, merry and young little dragon, playing happily and jubilantly with his best friend Jackie. But then, Jackie left Puff forever, which made Puff a grouchy, grumpy old dragon who didn't ever want to leave his dark, comfortable cave ever again. Until little Jack Porter came, and saved the dragon's happiness, took him out into the daylight and played with him again, just like his old Jackie used to. Aleesah Darlison describes Puff amazingly.
I recommend this absolutely fantastic book to ages eight to nine year old kids. I give Awesome Animal Stories for Kids a star rating of five out of five.
