Pip Bartlett's Guide to Magical Creatures by Jackson Pearce and Maggie Stiefvater
Published by Scholastic Australia
Rarely does pre-teen fiction strike such a cord with both parents and children. This book is creative. The magical combination of Pearce and the well known Stiefvater (who has a cult following in teen fiction) get together to create a world so much like our ordinary boring one, but with a special twist. In normal suburban life, there are magical creatures, and they are taken as much for granted as boring cats and dogs. There are griffins, unicorns, grimms and of course fuzzles. Pip, the heroine of the story can talk to these creatures and goes from scrape to scrape, trying to understand them better.
Filled with funky images and tongue in cheek descriptions of the animals, it is a true gem and will be loved by all 7-10 year olds, especially the girls. Well worth a look.
