What the Ladybird Heard Next by Julia Donaldson
Published by Pan Macmillan
I kept putting off this review because, well frankly Julia Donaldson is a legend in Children’s Literature and what can I say that hasn’t been said before.
But I will try!
The Ladybird sees and hears all on the farm where she resides. Missing eggs? Ladybird is on to it!
Lanky Len and Hefty Hugh have devised a ‘cunning plan’ to steal the fat red hen and make money out of selling her eggs. The farm animals work together, tempting the two thieves with bigger and better animals until finally Goose suggests they steal the Snerd, for her eggs are the size of rugby balls. She is rather shy and lives inside deep inside– deep inside a trailer full of animal pooh! Len and Hugh dig in deep and end up covered in muck and run off the property to the deafening sounds of the animals giving them what for!
The text moves quickly, humming along with a perfect pace and a cantering rhyme. It is humorous and inventive and connects with kids so well.
Lydia Monks’ illustrations are bold and colourful and the promise of glitter on every page is kept! Fantastic!
My daughter is a nanny and she knows the words of this book, What the Ladybird Heard Next and What the Ladybird heard, The Gruffalo and the best book ever Stickman.
She knows the words off by heart because her two little charges insist that these books be read and re read and reread. The three now know them inside out and upside down. They quote them at parties.
The children do not know their favourite books are all by the same author and that she is a legend. They just know they are fun and humorous and charming and engaging. And a little bit naughty! The two villains in the book end up in a truckload of nature’s finest because of a teensy weensy vigilant bug!
And the word Snerd makes them fall about laughing! You snerd! Don’t be a snerd! Snerd! Super duper Snuggly Snerd!
A wonderful book for two year olds to six year olds and for those who like a happy ending!
