Freak Street Series - Meet the Robotsons by Knife & Packer
Published by Scholastic Australia
The Robotsons live on Freak Street and their neighbours include The Aliensons, The Werewolfsons and The Wizardson ... you get the idea. All our favourite freaks.
They are just your average family except they are made of metal and live in fear of a sudden downpour of rain.
They rust. EEK!
Dad is an out of work stunt robot reliving his glory days. Mum is a hardworking maintenance and security robot at the Bank. The oldest boy is Roy. He is a serious inventor and has created Lizardo, the ultimate arch evil enemy for the screen to verse Roboticus Ranger, Dad’s former popular stunt character. Roy hopes to kick start Dad’s career and get him back into the limelight.
Royleen (love this name) is a typical teen girl madly in love with New Bots on the Block, a hilarious boy band take off. She too, is into inventing and has crafted the Electric Percussionator, ‘a sound that will reverberate through the whole universe.’
The book has many stories running through it and the whole family comes together to resolve the mysterious problem of who is robbing the Bank Mum works at and the serious problem of getting Dad back on the silver screen!
Each page of the novel is brightly coloured and illustrated with simple expressive cartoon like illustrations. The text is broken up into manageable pieces. There are fun asides and plenty of send ups and take offs – Chuck Broccoloid and Harvey Swaggermeyer are the bad guys!
Good fun, entertaining and aimed at mid range readers. I feel that boys would enjoy it the most but engaging for everyone. Get the collection!
