Wheelnuts! #3 Space Mash by Knife & Packer
Published by Scholastic Australia
Third in the popular series of wheelie zaniness is 'Space Mash', taking the craziest race on earth on an intergalactic adventure. With its slapstick humour and brightly animated full colour pages, independent readers from age seven will be thrilled by the antics in this 14-chapter car / rocket-racing journey.
Having had read other Wheelnuts! books in the series, I am able to appreciate the predictable plotline that makes these stories easy and familiar to follow. We are introduced to the six teams competing to win in each course set by billionaire, Warren 'Wheelie' Wheelnut. With an absolute disregard for any rules, one of the racers' goals is to collect Gold Stars for spending on gadgets and cheats in the Wheelnut Garage. This means that they contend to achieve victory at any cost, upgrading and using their cars in double-crossing chicanery. Zipping through different, exciting planets, they encounter the most hazardous of obstacles, including vicious aliens, meterorite showers, culinary tests, and an agonising space suit Wheelnut Challenge. When the forces of evil, that is, Wheelie's angry brother, Wipeout plots to destroy the race and the success of his clever sibling, it is encouraging to see the fierce competitors unite to fend off the threat.
Witty, gripping, page-turning fun will have its primary aged readers reliving their 'Space Mash' adventure repeatedly, and zooming out to grab the other Wheelnuts! books in this crazy series.
