The Kaboom Kid - The Big Time by J.V. McGee
Published by Simon & Schuster Australia
Ahh! The first day of Summer, roaring heat, flies, the beach and the cricket. Although the season is already in full swing (pun intended) and I have other books I should be reviewing first, it just seemed right to be reviewing the story of little Davy Warner and his dream of playing for Australia. Isn't it wonderful when dreams come true? He's now Australian Cricket Team Vice Captain after all.
The Kaboom (name of his bat) Kid by David Warner with J.V. McGee is a story which will be especially loved by young cricket fans, but will also be enjoyed by anyone who has a great passion, a dream and lots of determination just like little Davy. The Kaboom Kid (5) The Big Time tells the tale of Davy Warner, his best friends, his troublesome dog, Max and their adventures on and off the Representative Cricket Team, which include numerous scrapes Davy manages to get into.
The Kaboom Kid, The Big Time is an easy and enjoyable read with much humour, mischief, some life lessons and even a couple of vocabulary lessons thrown in for good measure. The characters are easy to relate to and the story is simple enough for someone with little time or who is not a confident reader or who...would just "rather be out playing cricket" like Davy. The large print format and the single page or double spread black and white illustrations, as well as the Kaboom logo at the beginning of each chapter and smaller versions of it every time there is some trouble, serve to enhance the reading experience.
With six books in the Kaboom Kid Series I recommend you pick up one (or more) providing great summer reading for the 8-12 year olds in your life.
