The Messy Incident by Grace Benedetti
Published by Boogie Books
Amber Lee, a Grade 4 student, wants to be a marine biologist and ends up saving all the students in the cafeteria from a truckload of frogs by dressing up in snorkelling gear and leading the frogs to a pond. The storyline reminds me of The Pied Piper but Amber Lee leads frogs away not rats.
Written and illustrated by students with the help of Child Writes program, a Queensland organisation which supports children through the creative process of writing and illustrating their own picture book. It isn’t documented as to the age of the author or illustrator and it is hard to tell from the drawings as people develop their drawing talent at different ages but the illustrations are very simple, expressive, animated and cute and certainly help tell the story and capture the moment. They almost look like someone has taken a snapshot of the moment with a pencil.
Nice choice of font, a good size which is almost like a child’s hand writing and with expressive dialogue I thoroughly enjoyed The Messy Incident and will definitely look out for more stories written by children with the help of Child Writes.
