Crawf's Kick it to Nick T-Rex at Training by Shane Crawford & Adrian Beck
Published by Penguin Books
The Crocs had scraped into the finals!
And at a last-minute training session Nick learns what's buried beneath the oval.
But the freaky discovery causes a T-Rex fossil to come to life…
If Nick can't stop the T-Rex, The day of Nick's final might be Nick's final day!
The first five sentences of Chapter 1 of T-Rex in Training took me back to my days at school and had me smiling. I must confess that I also sniggered at the principal's name - Mr Blumfield. So, the mood and pace for the story had been set. I was hooked already on that very first page of 54 words. As I read on, I realised that this book contained what every school student dreamed of - a Tyrannosaurus Rex, re-animated from beneath the school oval! How cool would that be!
Authors, Shane Crawford and Adrian Beck, have mixed AFL and a dinosaur with a successful story recipe to engage primary school readers in an action packed chapter book. And for the AFL addicted readers, there are references to AFL players Josh Kennedy, Paddy Dangerfield, Jordan Murdoch, Matty Lloyd, Robbie Gray, Jarryd Roughhead, Hayden Ballantyne, and Will Langford. However, if you are not a sports fan, this story has something else to offer. It contains something science-y, gooey, ancient and mysterious that will have you wondering how the T-Rex became re-animated. The chapter book is not all text though, illustrator, Heath McKenzie has captured the action and facial expressions of the characters exceptionally, adding a visual energy to the story that pulls you deeper inside the story.
Shane Crawford has also included Crawf's Footy Skills at the end of the book. No doubt they will encourage Crawf's Kick it to Nick fans to go outside to hone their rapid-fire handballing skills.
Besides the engaging story, what I really adore about Crawf's Kick it to Nick - T-Rex at Training are the role models that Shane Crawford & Adrian Beck provide for boys to read and write, and to do it well. The inclusion of a skilled and valued girl on the team simply catapulted this book way up into the top ranks of my 'unreal banana peel' books to include in any home, school or library.
