The Lost Calf by Kate McCullough
Published by Boogie Books
A small calf was standing
in a sea of grass in the middle
of a moonlit paddock…
Where is her mother?
How will she survive?
What of the hungry dingo that
waits in the shadows?
12 year old author, Kate McCullough has written an engaging story about a calf who is all alone in the outback in the cold chill of the winter air. In the dark of the night comes the howl of the dingo. The calf presses herself close to the grass. But still, the dingo comes closer. And so did a helping hand in the form of a young girl, who collected the calf in her arms and walked her to safety, and created a friendship that would last forever.
Kate's story of rescue and caring is wonderfully illustrated by talented 12 year old illustrator, Charlotte De Laine, who captures the essence of the story with an artistic skill that is beyond her years.
After reading The Lost Calf and enjoying the illustrations, it is easy to see how Kate and Charlotte were the 2013 winners of the Child Writes Competition.
The Lost Calf is a heartwarming story about kindness and caring, that will give you a glimpse into life on an Australian farm.
