Star of Deltora: Shadows of the Master by Emily Rodda
Published by Scholastic Australia
Dare Larsett had been missing for years after his first trading voyage. Now the rest of his family had to run away to a small town to hide. One of his daughters, Britta, was ambitious and wanted to become a trader like him, but she was stuck working in a cheese shop.
One day, she hears there would be a trading competition to be one of the three apprentices of the famous trader, Mab. These three apprentices would then set sail with her. Britta figures this is her dream and decides to try out no matter what.
To determine the top three, Mab sets a challenge after sitting a test paper. Each of the contestants is given a piece of gold and must find the best item to buy within two hours. But not all is easy. Someone is closely watching every move Britta strikes. Will Britta make it to sail with Mab the next day? Or will she get tricked and reach her doom?
This is an entertaining fantasy fiction book. It kept me flipping through the pages continuously and tempting me to read on, chapter after chapter.
When I read the first chapter, the story didn’t make sense, but gradually, bit by bit, I understood what was going on. I thought that was a very clever way to keep me entertained.
I would recommend, Star of Deltora to children aged 9- 12. This specific age group would both understand the plot and find the book captivating. A book like this is a mind- blowing one that everybody should read.
