'Once upon a time, there was a deafening roar, that awakened the people, like never before …IT WAS PUNK.
What is Punk? is a music primer for children—an introduction to the punk revolution, recreated in vivid 3-D clay illustrations and told through rhyming couplets. From London's Clash and Sex Pistols to the Ramones' NYC protopunk, from Iggy Pop to the Misfits, this volume depicts some of our culture's seminal moments and iconic characters.'
Author, Eric Morse has introduced a very brief history of punk music in a fabulous non-fiction picture book. It is the perfect introduction to punk music for anyone who was not exposed to the punk music genre in the mid-1970's - young or old. Although there are so many more layers to punk music, this book is a step towards investigating the genre that has impacted on the history of world music.
Visually, What Is Punk? has been illustrated flawlessly by Anny Yi. She has used clay as her medium, which suits the non-fiction punk topic with perfection. Her clay creations will dazzle you, and you will find yourself lost in each page scanning details from the punk era that she has included with precision.
Although young readers will not understand the motivation behind punk music, What Is Punk? by Eric Morse will give them an interesting slice of music history that will open the doors to conversation about punk music. And, as Eric Morse says,
"Punk is music, it's art,it's culture and vision.
But if you really want to know punk …You just have to listen.
