My Dog Bigsy by Alison Lester
Published by Penguin Random House
Alison Lester’s My Dog Bigsy is written with a child’s voice. It’s illustrated that way too, even down to the way a child would tag a drawing of Bigsy, such as ‘clickety clackety claws,’ with an arrow pointing to the dog’s foot.
The child lives on a farm with her family, her dog Bigsy and a menagerie of farm animals. Bigsy sleeps on the child’s bed and each day gets up well before she does. After Dad lets him outside, Bigsy heads energetically on his way around the farm.
In describing Bigsy’s pre-breakfast activities in the farmyard, the little girl tells the reader about what she hears from her bed as she listens to her dog rush about.
We learn Bigsy barks as he chases cockatoos out of the orchard, sends kangaroos over the fence, talks to the horses and herds the ducks into the dam. Bigsy doesn’t leave his noisy exuberance there, because off he goes, yapping as runs around the cows, spooks the sheep and checks on the pig and the hens.
Little Bigsy rolls with a squeaky toy as he plays in Mum’s garden with the family’s larger dog. When he arrives back at the house he greets the cat before scampering back inside for his breakfast.
From her bed the young girl has heard all sorts of noises, either from Bigsy himself or other creatures involved in Bigsy’s early morning tour of the farm. There’s barking, yapping, and the sound of Bigsy’s squeaky toy. There’s the squawk of cockatoos, the thump of kangaroos jumping fences and the sound of horses, ducks, cows, sheep, hens, a pig and even a cat.
We learn that Bigsy makes a crunching sound when he eats his breakfast and that he slurps from his water dish. At last, his claws go ‘clickety click clickety click’ on the floor as the tired little dog heads back to sleep on his mistress’s bed…just in time for the little girl to rise for the day.
This is a delightful picture book and perfect to introduce children to sounding out the noises of life on a farm, with the simple text and pictures demonstrating the energy of a dog and the love and pride a child has for her pet. We can almost hear the farm noises and sense the busy, vibrant place it is.
