The Foretelling of Georgie Spider by Ambelin Kwaymullina
Published by Walker Books
This book is the third and final in the series The Tribe. Having not read the first two books I was able to read this but felt I needed to research the series. Here is what I found before the review continues.
The Tribe is a dystopian series set in a future world where the earth had been destroyed by ‘the Reckoning.’ This had happened over three hundred years before. A very strict society had been formed and there were three classifications of people, Illegals, Citizens or Exempts. This is not ideal. The series follows three teenagers, Ashala, Ember and Georgie. Each book is named after each of these characters. The concepts of the series are quite in depth and the series is best suited to high school readers.
Book three is The Foretelling of Georgie Spider. This book is told in two voices, Ashala’s and Georgie’s. Georgie has foreseen Ashala’s death and that could mean the end of the world. She also sees that is the choices of certain people that could keep Ashala alive.
The set out of the book is clever with a different font for each character’s voice. This helps make it easier to determine who is speaking to you or telling their part of the story. The language is descriptive and to me a powerful message is delivered in this story. There is power in making choices and people can come together to make a change.
The author Ambelin Kwaymullina is an Aboriginal writer from the Palyku people. The homeland of the Palyku lies inthe Pilbara region of Western Australia. My research found that she feels she is writing what she calls ‘Indigenous futurisms.’ These are stories where she uses her knowledge, cultures and experiences to imagine the future from an Indigenous perspective. I enjoyed this book and have added books 1 and 2 to my ‘to read’ list.
I leave you with a powerful quote from the novel, ‘The world will not become as it was meant to be unless you become as you were meant to be.’
