Friday Barnes: Big Trouble by R. A. Spratt
Published by Random House
This is the third Friday Barnes story and after reading this I now know I want to read the first two. Number 4 is not due to be published until next year and Friday Barnes readers have been left in suspense. This story ends with a nice cliff hanger!
Friday goes to school at Highcrest Academy a boarding school. Her father turns up out of the blue and brings bad news, her mother has been kidnapped. This puzzles Friday and you soon learn she has an interesting relationship with her parents and that she is a very independent young girl. Her investigative skills are put to the test as she tries to solve the mystery of her missing mother. Her skills are further put to the test when the headmaster also needs Friday’s help when a new student, Princess Ingrid of Norway arrives at Highcrest. She’s rich, royal and even though security is tight at the school things start to go missing. The thief is nicknamed The Pimpernel.
Friday is much wiser than her 12 years and is closer to her Uncle Bernie than her parents. Uncle Bernie adds a great dimension to the story and becomes closer to her in a rather nice way.
This story is a fun read, has great action and will be enjoyed by those who enjoy adventure and mystery stories. It is mixed with humour as we follow Friday on her way to solving her big trouble problems. The cliff hanger is good and is definitely a great setup leading to Friday Barnes number 4.
