One Mole Digging A Hole by Julia Donaldson
Published by Pan Macmillan
‘One mole digging a hole. Two snakes with garden rakes. Three bears picking pears.’
This counting to ten picture book is written by Julia Donaldson, the acclaimed creator of the hugely popular The Gruffalo. It is a simpler styled book for her, but she has still made it both effective and entertaining. In a counting book you know what number is coming next, so to shake it up a bit, she has written it in a quirky rhyming manner, placing animals in bizarre Dr Seuss like scenarios for each number. It’s very funny reading.
Nick Sharratt, a prolific children’s book illustrator has illustrated over 250 books, and brings his talent again to this one. His illustrations are bright and bold, drawing you in and making you smile. There are plenty of objects to point at, and the last picture that shows all the animals enjoying the fruits of their labour is a wonderful scene. It would make a great poster!
The Guardian called it “Jokes aplenty”, and they’re not wrong. As far as counting books go, you can count on this one.
