Dear Dad I Want to be Just Like You by Ed Allen
Published by Scholastic Australia
This lovely book called “Dear Dad I Want to be Just Like You” introduces kids to the idea of letter writing in order to share what they love about their dad. Each page-opening of this book has a different letter written by a young animal offspring to his or her father. The letters creatively convey information about the characteristics of the animal that is being portrayed and at the same time demonstrate an affection and bond between the young animal and its dad. An extra dimension of reader engagement is found as some letters are written on flaps or little notes that must be removed from paper envelopes in order to be read.
This picture book has beautiful full page illustrations characterising a range of animals including lovable pets, farm yard favourites, wild animals, and some native Australian animals - giving it greater relevance to Aussie kids. At the end of the book kids are encouraged to write a letter to their own dad and an empty envelope is provided.
This book provides a lovely way for kids to explore their thoughts and feelings about their own dad. The letters are perhaps aimed at a mid-childhood reading ability, but the letters and illustrations can be loved by kids of all ages if read by an adult.
