The Duties of a Cat by Jenny Blackford
Published by Pitt Street Poetry
Personally I am a dog person but through reading the poems in The Duties of a Cat, I began to warm to felines. With lines of ‘a cat must stand or walk on every piece of paper on the floor’ and ‘extra points for sleeping on the crisp, warm, stack of finished ironing’ I had visions of cats padding around the house on their delicate paws sussing out new places to sleep and hide.
The simple and appealing pencil drawings by Michael Robson certainly capture each cat’s character described by Jenny Blackford in titles such as, Soft silk sack, Dream hunt and Forests of fur.
A small book of twelve poems that will be loved by the most ardent of cat lovers and evoke many memorable moments with their own beloved feline.
