An English Year by Tania McCartney and Tina Snerling is a celebration!
We are introduced to five English children from different cultural backgrounds all experiencing and celebrating an English year in their own way.
Victoria, Aman, Tandi, George and Amelia all have different backgrounds. Victoria’s family have lived in England for many generations. Aman’s family arrived from England shortly before his birth ten years ago. Tandi’s family originated from Jamaica. George and his family were born and bred in England while Amelia and her family arrived only three years earlier and are absorbing the new language and cultures.
Each month is speckled with history, fun and everyday life – all the foundations that make a child’s memories special and shape who they become. January through to December is bursting with facts from; the weather they experience, games they play, visual delights, family customs and delicious culinary treats.
England’s legacy of country sides steeped in history to the lively cities, magnificent lakes, pebbly beaches and northern moors all feature under this umbrella of British history.
Tina’s unique interpretation lights up every page her creative illustrations capture the sights, sounds and flavours that make this book an English celebration.
I enjoyed the Geographic listing and map at the end adding to this historical work of art.
Be sure to check out other books from the ‘A Kids Year’ series at your local bookstore.
Never having travelled to England but familiar with many of their traditions and celebrations, it was lovely to see the kaleidoscope of personalities enjoying the year’s festivities in their own special way.
