The Possum Magic Cookbook based on Possum Magic by Mem Fox
Published by Scholastic Australia
One look at the contents page makes your mouth water and your mind boggle at the prospect of making and eating Funny Dip Echidna, Frog Jelly, Twhirly Whirlys, Minty Pea Toasties, Sparkle biscuits and not to mention Apple Fizz drink.
With beautiful and expressive illustrations, by Julie Vivas, of characters from Mem Fox’s classic Possum Magic, children and adults will delight in finding Hush, Grandma Poss and other familiar animals using some of the kitchen gadgets required for the recipes, i.e. rolling pin, sieve and mixing bowl. I laughed out loud when I saw four echidnas dressed as life-savers carrying a slice of the Easy Peasy Pizza!
The iconic Australian foods of Anzac biscuits, pumpkin scones, pavlova and lamingtons will be familiar to readers of Possum Magic as the food that Hush and Grandma Poss found on their travels and which now can be made in your own kitchen in true Hush style.
The recipes are suitable for any age, with some help from a grown-up, and the simple instructions are easy to follow and read. With serving sizes and presentation suggestions children will enjoy making and eating these delicious goodies and will want to make everything and revisit their favourite page or animal again and again.
This book would make a great present for anyone who has read Possum Magic and could be used as inspiration for a Possum Magic / Australian Bush party with authentic treats and will make a good start to your child’s recipe book collection.
