I’m a Hungry Dinosaur by Janeen Brian
Published by Penguin Books Australia
A hungry little dinosaur decides to bake a cake. He slips it, slops it, pats it, smooths it, sprinkles it AND…well you can imagine the rest.
Before you even turn a page “I’m a Hungry Dinosaur” is a visually enticing book for preschool aged kids. Filled with brightly coloured text and cute picks, popping against a smooth, glossy white background, the book uses a mix of rhyme and onomatopoeia to spark the imagination and tickle the senses.
Pages of large colourful text, reinforce the actions and language used in the story and provide fun spots for the kids to join in. My 3 year old daughter memorised these sections and now when we read “I’m a Hungry Dinosaur” together, she always stops me to read those parts herself.
The illustrations are quite unique, created like a cake, out of the very ingredients the hungry little dinosaur is using. Cocoa, Sprinkles, flour and icing are mixed cleverly with magic pencils and water colour to breathe visual life into the story.
“I’m a Hungry Dinosaur” is part of a series of books for preschoolers. It’s counterpart, “I’m a Dirty Dinosaur” is just as charming, using the same character and techniques to tell the story. Both of them are lighthearted and full of fun, just like kids.
