Why I Love Footy by Michael Wagner
Published by Penguin Books Australia
With footy season in full swing, what little (and big) AFL fan wouldn't love this book? With its leather bound football on the spine and all the team scarves on the endpapers, 'Why I Love Footy' already hits the mark.
It's obvious that legendary illustrator, Tom Jellett won the tackle with the main character sporting the colours of his own footy team - the Swannies (discover the author's and illustrator's footy talents on the introductory page). Decked out in his whites and reds, the boy narrating the story tells of his experiences of going to a football match with his family. We are taken through all aspects of the sport, from clothing, to catching the train, the layout of the players positions on the field, team mascots and singing the team song. The young boy shares his excitement of the match, with goals being kicked, tackles and speckies. You can just about hear the roars and feel the lively atmosphere through the pages. The day is fondly wrapped up with reflections on the game as Dad puts the boy to bed.
'Why I Love Footy' is a 're-mark-a-ball' book for parents to share special moments and common bonds with their children. There is a great mix of narration with casual dialogue, making the text sound like a genuine experience of a young footy fan. There is also potential for in-depth discussion about football terms and rules for those not as familiar with the game.
AFL supporters, grab yourself a copy today! It's a winner!
