Weirdo 4: Super Weird! By Anh Do
Published by Scholastic Australia
When I opened my first pack of review books from Creative Kids Tales, I knew instantly which book I would review first. Bursting like a purple grape from the pile, was Weirdo 4: Super Weird! By Anh Do.
This series of books is especially dear to us because it was the series that opened up the world of independent reading to our son. Weirdo was the first chapter book he ever read and it was the first book he really connected with and CHOSE to read, non stop, to the end, all by himself. It was the first book he CHOSE to read when he could’ve played, watched TV or gone to the park. Every kid needs THAT book. The book that releases the magic and unleashes the treasures only reading can provide. Weirdo was that book for Cody and from there the floodgates opened.
So you can see why I was excited to see what Weir and his family of Do’s had in store for us this time but I wasn’t quick enough, my son had already spied his prize and a deft hand swept it up before I could even offer. A day and a half later, Weirdo 4 has been devoured and my, soon to be 7 year old, has given it his seal of approval once more. He loved it! He thought it was not only the best of the 4 books but the funniest. He particularly loved the addition of Fido the dog.
After reading them all, this is what I think you should know about the WeirDO books. They are hilarious and if you are a school aged boy, they are floor dropping, belly splitting, tear squeezingly funny…I’ve witnessed this myself.
Weir DO (yep that’s his name) is just like any other school aged kid, facing the same problems and bullies and loves and embarrassments and worries as any other school aged kid, except a little weirder. He has a weird name, a weird family, weird pets and the things that happen to him are always very weird. In WeirDO 4: Super Weird, the Do’s have a new pet dog, who bizarrely ends up friends with their odd bird Blockhead, who starts to bark like a dog and together they go on adventures and end up famous…pretty weird huh! It’s a great yarn and well worth the read.
The other thing you need to know about the Weirdo books is that they are brilliant early reader books. They are fun, and entertaining from beginning to end, totally tuned into the young kid navigating school, with easily digestible language and humourous pictures, that make learning to read an absolute pleasure.
I cannot recommend these books enough…or the author for that matter but that’s a whole different review, except to say look him up, his work is truly extraordinary.
