Nightbird by Alice Hoffman
Published by Simon & Schuster
Alice Hoffman, long admired for her adult novels turns her hand to a wondrous tale for the 11-14 year olds. Set in a small american town, called Sidwell, it chronicles the tale of a far from ordinary family. Told from the perspective of a 12 year old girl with the nickname Twig, we learn why she must keep her distance from the other towns folk. Her family has a secret, her brother James, four years her senior, can't be seen in public or even known to exist. He has wings. Glorious black wings that all the males have been cursed with in his family for over 200 years.
The story draws us into this small town world and into the heartfelt desires of those involved. Twig, desperately wants friends, her mother longs for love, and her brother wishes to be free to fly, but to be free of the curse as well. Will they be able to achieve all three?
Beautifully crafted, with magnificent descriptions of home baked apple pies, this novel is a sweetreat, with no warnings needed.
