John Williamson’s Christmas in Australia
Published by Penguin Books Australia
‘It’s December in Australia; Time to remember all the family. Christmas tree – native pine, Lights and tinsel all entwined. Put a fairy on the top. There’s Gran and Pa and Joan and Pop.’
Written by the quintessential Aussie icon John Williamson, this popular family song will ring true for many Australian families during Christmas time. It poetically portrays the time when the whole family gets together, to eat ham, play cricket, and hopefully, if everyone can stay still for one moment – a family photo. Where’s Ami? I think she is on the loo. Now where is Sam? He’s over there playing marbles. Someone get Fox the dog too. Will Dad ever get the family picture taken? Christmas is a hectic, joyous time and this book portrays it perfectly. The illustrations by Mitch Vane, bring to life all the little interactions of this Christmas chaos. His detailed water colours capture an array of stories within the story, and beautifully highlights the colourful characters and cheekiness only a family can conjure at Christmas.
I found this to be a fun read, and immensely enjoyed looking for all the magic moments that the illustrations provide.
