Meet Marly by Alice Pung
Published by Penguin Books Australia
“Meet Marly” is a book that I thoroughly enjoyed reading. I especially liked the fact that the story was very realistic and could have been based on a true story. That made it was easy to imagine being Marly.
The series this book is from is called “Our Australian Girl.” I’ve already read 7 books from the series and I immediately knew that this would be a great book.
It’s 1983 and Marly’s cousins are coming over to stay at her house from Vietnam. Her cousins decide to go to the same school as Marly. At school, Marly already has friends of her own who play with toys every lunch time. Her friends tease Marly’s cousins and don’t let them join their play. Marly wants to play with her cousins as well as her friends and she doesn’t want to get embarrassed. Now it’s up to Marly to decide whose side she’s on - her friends’ or her cousins’.
I felt very involved with the story as if I were Marly and the author made me think about all the things Marly did right or wrong. When I read about Marly making some decisions, I got angry with her and thought that if I were her, I definitely wouldn’t act or behave like her. “Meet Marly” made me understand the character’s feelings.
After reading this book, I feel determined to read the next one.
Meet Marly is a great real-life adventure with many amazing ideas, descriptive language and unforgettable characters.
